Make Side Dishes and Baked Goods Now

Look at your menu and pick a side dish or two that can be prepared and frozen. Go ahead and make them now before things get too crazy and stick them in the freezer. Just be sure to make a note on your calendar to take them out of the freezer a day or two before you need them. And do the same about defrosting your turkey.

If you love to make Christmas cookies but run low on time as Christmas gets closer, remember most already baked cookies and some cookie dough can be frozen up to 1-2 months in advance. So you can get a jump on that as well.

Inventory Paper Goods

Take inventory now of your holiday paper goods (paper plates, napkins, tablecloths) BEFORE you go shopping. No need to buy another Christmas tablecloth when you already have 3 tucked away somewhere.

Plan A Day-After Menu Now

There’s nothing like staring at a pile of leftover turkey and not having an idea of what to do with it now.  Spend a little time before you start cooking to plan a “day after” menu. Find a couple of good recipes for the leftover turkey, ham and mashed potatoes on websites like www.allrecipes.com and www.foodnetwork.com.

Before You Travel

If you are traveling by car over the holidays, check the local transit source before you leave to see if there is any active construction or accidents on your route. Most states have a traffic website. Google the state name and 511. Here in Georgia the site is 511ga.org  Most states even have apps that allow you to check on traffic conditions.

Also the Map app on your phone or a travel app like Waze can give you up-to-date travel information. Be sure to check it before you head out on your trip or even if you are just trying to get to the mall to go shopping.  You can avoid a lot of headaches by taking even the slightest detour.

Take Care of Yourself

As Kit and Vivian said in Pretty Woman, “take care of you.”  During all of the holiday craziness, you have to be sure you are taking care of yourself.

  • Eat right. As much as we all want cookies and pie to be a balanced diet, they aren’t
  • Get some exercise everyday – even if it is just walking around the block.
  • Treat yourself to a massage or a pedicure.
  • Have lunch with a good friend
  • Be thankful. Too often we get caught up in the craziness of the season that we forget that we have so many blessings to be thankful for.
